Plans for the future

TL;DR

  • I'll be keeping this game simple, not a mainstream game, but I'll accept comparison with them.
  • I will start rebuilding the game in the followings weeks, and moving to isometric view with upgraded graphics too (but keeping the pixelart).
  • I've opened a youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LuisMoraGameDev I'll post the videos in spanish but I'll add my own english captions to it.

A brief talk about expectations

I want this game be ambitious and fun. We all want play that big, epic, and impressive game with hours and hours of conntent. This game is going to be compared with the last Rogue-like (Rogue-lite) games. The Binding of Isaac, Hades, The cult of the lamb, maybe Loop hero? I actually don't know if that game is a rogue-like one, I haven't play yet lol.

But, there are 2 things that I need to be clear:

  1. I'm working alone in this project
  2. I don't want to be developing this game for 6 years of my life.

Now, it doesn't mean I won't try to make this game my best game. So, you guys want a good and fun game, I want to develop a good and a fun game. So, let's keep it simple with the features by now. Maybe in the future I will consider adding more features, but, each feature that I want to add to this game, is already thought. Will I say you what are those? Nope. I've seen a lot of developers getting hate for not implementing something that they wanted to implement. But, because I actually don't know if I'll be able to do this stuff in a reasonable period of time, I won't post anything but, the things that I am adding and making right now.

I doesn't mean that I won't spoil you with some things that I can ensure that will be in the final product.

Final product to-do list

This is not in any particular order, and, I will not add any date for them. You'll be able to see the exact stage of these things in my devblogs (I'll talk later about this):

  • Diferent ships, customizable ships (fixed set of pieces that you'll be able to change) or fixed set of ships.
  • A "rule world", it means that you'll be able to predict a little bit the patterns, it is going to be random, but I want to balance this randomness.
  • Reward exploration, a.k.a remove the infinite loop (?). Actually, I don't know if this is going to be a thing, but the current state of, the same map generate random over and over again is going to be removed. The current one is just a placeholder.
  • Achievements
  • Save and load, should I mention this? If somebody is asking why there is no save and load right now it because I didn't have time to implementing and I don't know how to do it in Godot :P
  • Different islands, Differents rewards, I want to add differents play styles. For example, something more relax and chill or playing like if it's a survival game, or rushing things and going really fast. All playstyles are going to have their pro and cons, but, I want to support them all so you can play as you like.
  • "Run abilities", most rogue likes, (even the first one) had "inrun" items, the current state of the game (just a prototype) doesn't have any. But this is not intended, I want to add rewards.
  • Stages, going deeper in the sea is going to give you more rewards, but this will add more risks. But, that is going to be the only way to unlock most things, right now is the blue sea and islands. But, next stages will have other colors, other type of islands.
  • More than islands, The islands right now are good, but I find it a little boring. I want this game be chill game, but chill doesn't mean slow and boring, I want make things a little more interesting some times. So, things like obstacles, random events, etc.
  • Mod support, I will try to accomplish this in all my games, and, if some day in a future I make a game that doesn't support mods at all, I'll give you all thr right to burn  my house jaja. (Don't do it, I won't be able to make more games if I die ._.)
  • And if somebody ask... Yeah I will add fx, music and easter egg. :P

And that's all I can think right know (maybe I am missing something).

Setting seals to the next island!

Right now, the game that you can download is a prototype, I am building from scratch a new version of this game, but why? As I said in my first devblog here. I want to upgrade the graphics and the code. I'll keep in godot because I want people being able to mod this game.

So, my current plans is to make my game a 3D pixel art game, I am not talking about making 2D pixel art that looks pixel art. I am talking about making the game actually 3D, but, applying some filters and shaders so it can look like actual pixel art. The camera is going to change too. It isn't going to be top down view, but it'll be Isometric (actually not isometric because real pixel art isometric doesn't look good so you use another angel for the corners, and because my game is going to be a 3D world translating it to 2D pixel art, I have to make some adjustments to the camera angle too), I think I'll be ready in one or two week to show you something. I won't post it as a "new" version of the game because a new version of the game cannot be something with less features. But, I will publish a little demo to see if people like that change or not.

Youtube channel

I wasn't sure about this one, but I will start posting my devblogs in youtube. I WON'T MAKE ANY PROMISE OF HOW RECURRENT I WILL BE UPLADING THE VIDEOSSorry for that... as I was talking, I'll start posting my  progress there so you can check the "stage" of the development just by checking my youtube channel. Right now, the total count of uploaded videos is 0.

Allow me to upgrade the game first, and record it so I can create a game about how I did it and all the technical details. The things that you might not like it is the language, my native language is spanish and I want to be included in the spanish community, so, I will talk in spanish to "attract" spanish people. But don't worry, I'll add manually captions so you all can enjoy the dev progress of this game. My main porpuse of the Youtube Channel is to make "marketing" of the game in the form of devblogs, I mean, I want people play my game, and I love you all that are playing this game at this very early stage, but I want to live by making videogames, and I don't just want to be know for the game, but as a developer. Most people know Minecraft, but not everybody know that Notch used to make 4k (kilobytes) games, another one named "Prelude of the Chambered", and many more.

The link of my channel is right there at the beginning of the post, what? did you expect I repeat the same link here? Sorry, I'll stand DRY ;)

Final thoughts

I don't have any expectations too. But, I will do my best in making this game, building a nice community (if that community is built at first place...) and being opened and honest with everybody about everything. (Except my private life obviously). I don't know where I am going with all this. Or even if I'll reach something, but, if I don't start this run, I won't figure out. Thanks you for taking the time to read this post. :)
